Vestry News for June

As the Vestry (Trinity’s “board of directors”) meets well after the monthly newsletter deadline, our report of the April 28th meeting finally reaches you now. Items as of April included:

• Sr. Warden interim plan: Our current Sr. Warden, John Thielens, announced that, as a result of an unanticipated opportunity, he had accepted a new job in Alpharetta, GA, and that he, Katie and kids would be relocating around June 1. Because of other constraints and personal commitments, no other Vestry member could assume the Sr. Warden responsibilities at this time. As permitted by our canons and bylaws, the Vestry elected Howard Smith (who graciously agreed) as an interim Vestry member and as interim Sr. Warden to replace John through the remainder of this year. During our Parish-wide elections this fall, the Parish members will elect four regular new Vestry members for three-year terms plus a fifth Vestry member for a one-year term to complete the remainder of John’s term. Our new Sr. Warden for next year will be appointed by our new Rector. We will greatly miss the Thielens, but we all want to express our sincere gratitude for their many contributions to Trinity and to wish them many blessings and complete happiness in their new situation.

• Vestry/Parish Goals: We continued our discussions from previous meetings regarding the need to add an outward, mission-focused goal to our other four goals that would include concerns for social welfare, social justice, and the environment. We decided on the succinct description “Action for mercy and justice” to encompass all of those concerns. Our 2009 Vestry/Parish Goals are now: (1) Engaging worship, (2) Intentional faith development, (3) Radical welcoming, (4) Call our new rector, and (5) Action for mercy and justice.

• Rummage Sale: We discussed and support the Outreach Commission’s recommendations to postpone the next rummage sale until 2010 and to form a steering committee with representatives from all impacted Trinity groups to plan and coordinate the 2010 rummage sale in order to maximize its benefits and to minimize its impact on other Parish activities. We also discussed and strongly support Outreach’s planned Oktoberfest fundraising event this fall.

• Communications Committee: A preliminary proposal to improve the efficiency of Trinity’s many written and electronic communications media was presented for consideration at future Vestry meetings.

Vestry meetings are open to all, so please join us if you wish at 7 p.m. the 4th Tuesday of every month.
